The first Southern Memorial Coin Convention was held in 1962 in Chattanooga, TN. Since 1964 the Tennessee State Numismatic Society (TSNS) has held its convention in the Chattanooga area.
The convention has grown from a small 30 table coin show in the 80's to an over 200 numismatic dealer table event, with more than 2,000 people on average that attend every show.
There is no question that the internet has transformed numismatics over the past two decades. It has changed the way people buy and sell coins by opening a huge, new online market. Most dealers will tell you that the internet is only as good as the image.
TSNS is a friendly environment filled with helpful coin dealers. There are other activities, such as the Young Numismatist program for your children. Coin shows are a wonderful opportunity to buy and sell coins and it provides a source of enjoyment in our hobby.
If you are attending to buy or sell coins, you can feel secure about doing business with any dealer at the show who has a table. Coin shows are especially important and attending shows can be a rewarding experience. Another benefit is with so many coins offered for sale in one location, you may have better luck finding a particular scarce or unique item you need for your collection.
For those thinking about selling their coins, coin shows present an incredible opportunity to do so. Seeing so many coins at TSNS or any show is also critical to learning how to grade. At shows today, so many of the coins you will see are graded by a third-party grading company, i.e. NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG and SEGS, which enables you to view the differences among coins and the grading services. You may note that different grading companies, might not be the same as others. Raw coins are those that are not graded holders. It is especially important to purchase coins based on what you want and agreeing up on condition and price, by the coin, not the holder.
TSNS provides a forum for coin collectors and dealers to come together twice a year to buy, sell and trade their numismatic items. Along with numismatic items, many dealers also have exonumia and jewelry. Our shows are always the first weekend of March and the second weekend of November each year.
Coin and stamp supplies are also available.
